Well, I really didn’t think that my first “real” post will be about that, but life brings on what it does…
It seems that someone has pointed out to me (thank you!!!), a link at Etsy.com (a wonderful site that has all handmade stuff) regarding a couple of items (resin bracelets), with my tarot art on them!!!!
Of course I never knew about this and have not authorised that use. (not only that, but I have tried in the past doing some jewelery with my art, but i didn’t think it came out professional enough… I can’t say i like the subject result either…
Anyway, on one hand it’s definitely flattering; the seller wrote “the images were just too spiffy not to make another [bracelet]-[she made two but maybe more... who knows..]
I’m also sure that the creator of the bracelets did not mean to take great advantage of my art, she only sells these bracelets for $12-$14 anyway… we are not talking about a massive threat here (but when does it become one?), but still, this is not the issue, is it?
We are talking about copyright laws here, and the need to respect someone’s original work. It’s wrong to use other’s artwork that way. Now I may have already chilled about it (have I?), but when i saw it, I was just SO shocked… it made me feel angry and invaded… As if my limits were non existing. Like a mother that her child was taken from her for a week, with no notice! of someone standing in your living room going through your purse…This is the vulnerable side of creation…
And still, feelings or no feelings, this is just against the law.
Please, PLEASE have respect for artist’s work whethere it’s tarot art, music or poetry. Be creative- do your own stuff. And if you must use someone else’s work, at least ask, and be willing to pay for it!
Of course I reported this at etsy.com. and I just hope they will do something about it.
I prefer not to contact the person in subject myself – I’m afraid of what i’m going to say… my blow may be too hot.. in case she’s just ignorant (and me too naive…)
